Affordable housing apartments at Brimhay start to take shape

ENERGY-SAVING SCHEME AT DARTINGTON MAKING GOOD PROGRESS

A community benefit society is making steady progress with 12 new apartments that will provide much-needed affordable housing for people in the Dartington area, part-funded by a grant of £456,000 from Homes England.

The apartments form Phase 1 of an exciting development scheme at Brimhay Gardens, which will ultimately deliver a total of 32 new homes for a range of occupiers.
In November 2018, South Devon Rural Housing Association Limited (SDR) contractors – Coyde Construction Ltd. – commenced the project to replace 18 outdated bungalows, built in the 1960s, with 12 affordable apartments. Built to high standards, these are to be housed in a three-storey energy-efficient building, which is now taking shape at Brimhay Gardens.

The remaining tenants of the bungalows will have the opportunity to move straight into the new apartments on completion. The others will be let through Devon Home Choice to other eligible people.

HIGH-QUALITY

A further 12 homes will be built and sold at market value, with the developer, Rural Homes Limited, gift aiding profit back to its parent company, South Devon Rural Housing Association Limited, to help fund the affordable homes. Rural Homes Limited, who act as SDR’s development agent, are project-managing construction of the affordable units. News of these 12 homes for sale at Brimhay Gardens will be released shortly.

Acting Chief Executive Claire Barnett said: “SDR has an enviable reputation for providing high-quality housing for local people with a range of needs. We will soon be able to provide new high quality homes for our remaining tenants at Brimhay Gardens and to other eligible applicants. Every home will have a high energy-efficiency rating, which will save residents money AND be good for the environment.
