World Tambourelli Championships 2014

PRESS RELEASE

The World Tambourelli Championships were held once again over the weekend of 2 – 3 August at Riverford Farm, near Staverton.  Last year, the World Championships took place in Dresden, Germany, so there was great delight at the return, this year, of this event to the South Hams.

There was heavy rain on the Friday preceding, and the outlook was grim as the first competitors – Taro Shiokawa and Kaede Nagahara – arrived at Totnes station, after a long journey from Japan.  Miraculously, however, the weather gradually cleared to reveal the sun on Saturday morning.  It remained fine over the weekend until the finals in the early hours of Monday morning.

As usual, the Championships consisted of Men’s and Women’s Singles, Mixed Doubles (with partners drawn from a hat), and the Luscombe Cup Singles and Doubles (for those aged 13 and under).

Oliver Dakin-Edwards from Ashburton won the Luscombe Singles Cup after a tense final with his Doubles partner, Zion Norris from Landscove.  Zion and Oliver won the Luscombe Doubles Cup after playing Finlay Porter (from Harberton) and Nuno Priestman from SLOT – South London Tambourelli.

The Devon Tambourelli Association (DTA) this year set up eight outdoor courts in the same delightful woodland glade as two years ago.  Tambourelli is a game with a musical as well as a sporting dimension, being played with adapted tambourines and shuttlecocks over a net.  The current version of the game has spread to the South-West of England over the last 15 years.

DTA members were strongly represented in the Doubles Championships.  After an exciting match against Jacob Edwards (Ashburton) and Oliver Tringham (Cott), Silver Levy-So (Totnes) and Thomas Amey (Memory Cross) went through to the Finals.  Here, Silver and Tom also triumphed over Daniel Francis-Bernson (Barcelona) and Finlay Porter to become this year’s World Doubles Champions.

Indy Priestman had been unbeaten Ladies’ Singles Champion every year she has defended her title:  originally from Galloway, Indy now lives and plays in Stockholm, Sweden.  It seemed that nothing would change again, this year, until the late-night Ladies Final was actually held.  Indy complained of the cold, before taking her place under the floodlights.  She faced Jasmine Bosenick (from Oxford) – a contender Indy has met several times over the years.  Ezra Cohen (from Brighton), himself a former World Men’s Singles Champion (2008), umpired the match, but the result was not in doubt.  Jasmine was presented with the Ladies Singles Cup at the end of the night.

Ezra also umpired the Men’s Singles Final, where Bazil Hughes (Galloway), the reigning Men’s Champion was challenged by Finn Lennartsson from Sweden.  Bazil retained his title after a high quality match.

Cups and Trophies were presented by Dr. Kenneth Delbray, of Castle Stewart, who has done so much for the development of Tambourelli from its origins forty years ago in the South-West of Scotland.  Sunday was also the occasion of the Doctor’s 70th birthday, and for this, Julia Elliott (Cott) baked several magnificent cakes.

The Devon Tambourelli Association would like to express its thanks to all those who supported the event and did so much to make it possible – above all Oliver and Esther Watson and their family, of Riverford Farm, without whose long-standing hospitality and support, the event would never happen.  The DTA would also like to thank Susie Claiden (from Bristol) who led a superb team of caterers;  South Devon Rural Housing Association for their grant aid to ensure that local teenagers were not excluded;  and to the sponsor of the Luscombe Cup, Gabriel David of Luscombe Organic Drinks.  We would also like to thank all the many others who helped to make the event possible.
